According to Dr.Sukhum Kanchanapimai, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, PM2.5 particulate matters are fine inhalable particles which can cause numerous health effects. Larger particles are generally filtered in the nose and throat via cilia and mucus, but smaller particles can settle in the bronchi and lungs. They can be absorbed by lungs and bloodstream, and cause health problems.
Associate Pro.Dr.Nitipatana Chierakul, the President of the Thoracic Society of Thailand, agreed that PM2.5 particles can trigger respiratory symptoms, such as asthma, and can cause long-term health problems, such as pulmonary emphysema, and lung cancer.
One of the treatments to relieve symptoms from dust exposure is using 0.9% sodium chloride solution (normal saline solution, NSS) for nasal irrigation to wash away dust and other loose particulate matters to help soothe itchy, stuffy, runny nose, and sneezing.
